Well, Actually…
Here’s your random moment of snark for the day, disguised as a bit of trivia…
Over at Empty Netters (ah, just love those yinzers!) Seth takes issue with an excellent comparison between the Caps of today and the Oilers’ dynasty of the 1980s:
“Capitals fans are beginning to compare their team to the Oilers of the mid 1980s. Because the Oilers of that decade are apparently best remembered for their first- and second-round playoff exits.”
Actually, Seth, they may not be best known for that – but they certainly did it. Here’s the playoff history for the Oilers of the ’80s:
1979-80 – lost in preliminary round (1st round)
1980-81 – won in preliminary round, lost in quarterfinals (2nd round)
1981-82 – lost in division semifinals (1st round)
1982-83 – won division semifinals, finals, conference finals; lost in Cup finals
1983-84 – won the Cup
1984-85 – won the Cup
1985-86 – won division semifinals, lost in division finals (2nd round)
1986-87 – won the Cup
1987-88 – won the Cup
1988-89 – lost in division semifinals (1st round)
1989-90 – won the Cup
And lest we forget, before having their own “dynasty” (um, ha ha) back in the early 90s, the Pens made 10 postseason appearances – sandwiched around 6 straight years of missing the playoffs – during which they advanced past the second round exactly zero times.
here’s a look at the cornerstone to a real dynasty!

Hey, the only way the Cup comes back to Pittsburgh is if Patrick Wey plays for us in the Finals and brings it back to his hometown.
And if he does, I’ll absolutely be there
