Deconstructing the Defense
Amid the crazy contracts and big dollars handed out throughout the league, the hot topic of conversation among Caps fans remains the defense: upgrade or evolve?
There is the argument that the Caps need to make a deal, either by free agency or trade, to significantly upgrade the blue line. But to me it’s one of those easy, knee-jerk arguments that comes more from reading too many so-called “analysts” and less from actually watching what’s on the ice.
McPhee took a lot of heat from some corners of CapsNation the day before Free Agency for saying “[o]n defense we’re fine” – but I’m inclined to agree with him. An addition by signing or trade wouldn’t be a bad thing if done for the right price, but the defense is better than people give them credit for and will continue to improve.
1) Numbers don’t lie (much)
During the 2008-09 season the Caps gave up 245 goals; it’s not a great number but it’s also not a horrible one, given that the league average for goals against was 239. Add in the fact that the Caps scored 272 goals – good for third in the league – and you get the simple truth that, at the end of the day, you just want to score more goals than the other guy.
And then consider that the two Cup finalists gave up around the same number of goals, with Pittsburgh yielding 239 and Detroit 244.
Looking at postseason defense, where it becomes that much more important, the Caps were actually astonishingly good despite an injured and clearly hampered Mike Green. In the first round they only gave up four goals once, in Game 1; they earned two shutouts and limited the Rangers to one goal twice, keeping shots on goal down by blocking shots and playing physical.
Granted, the second round was a little rougher as the Penguins discovered a weakness in the Caps’ inability to clear the crease – a weakness that was more pronounced by Green’s inability to play his game. It’s not an excuse, but a fact and one we have to live with. Take it as another lesson learned for a young defense. And consider that the Caps still played five of the seven games to one-goal decisions, all with three of their top six D banged up and with a “weak” defense to start.
2) Health pays dividends
Plain and simple – healthy bodies equal healthy defense. Mike Green at 100%, Tom Poti at 100%, this defense looks a lot different. And never underestimate the impact of having Brian Pothier healthy all year.
3) Team defense is key
You want your defensemen to play defense, no question. But the fact is that the best teams play a total team defense – if you need a prime example, watch the third period of the Cup-clinching Game 7 again and try to argue that the Pens didn’t execute this commitment perfectly.
As much as the blue line is responsible for shutting down forwards and the goalie is responsible for stopping the shooter, the forwards are responsible for chipping in. When the Caps are on, this works – you see guys making the simple plays and low-risk passes, forwards blocking shots and defensemen cutting down angles. You see Ovechkin busting his butt to get down ice and break up a play, Semin throwing checks and Laich clogging up the neutral zone.
When they’re not, though, you get the high-risk, cross-rink passes that often end up on the other team’s sticks and the bad turnovers that hang the defense out to dry. Again, this isn’t a question of upgrading the defense – it’s a question of youth and experience and learning from mistakes. It’ll come in time.
4) Prospects on their way
The Caps have some great organizational depth on defense, and that’s something not only worth waiting for but something fans should be wary of squandering in search of landing that stud defenseman. And make no mistake, if the Caps go after one (a la Pronger) you can bet that organizational depth is what other teams are looking for.
There’s Alzner, who has finished his first professional year (along with a good number of NHL games) and who looks poised to challenge for a roster spot in camp this year. There’s Carlson, shaping up to be a steal in return for Steve Eminger – a 19 year old already gaining good word of mouth as someone who could be ready sooner rather than later. There’s Josh Godfrey, the kid with the cannon for a shot. There’s Tyler Sloan and Sean Collins, relative veterans who bring experience and some good, solid NHL performances to the table.
And they’ll all have the help of their Calder Cup-winning coach Bob Woods, taking over for Jay Leach as the assistant coach and the man whose defensive vision will dictate the way the blue line performs.
5) The System
Let’s face it, Boudreau’s system is never going to be mistaken for the trap – and thank goodness for that. It’s exciting and fast and aggressive; it calls for forwards to be constantly on the move and defensemen constantly poised to join the rush. It’s a system designed for the players who work within it, players with speed and skill and puck possession ability.
And yes, it’s a system that can at times make the defense and/or the goaltender bear the brunt of the blame, fair or not. It’s also, however, not a system that automatically dooms the defense – and I get the sense a lot of people look at the style of play, look at the players and assume rather than observe that defense is an issue.
This team still has some holes in it, no question. Is Shaone Morrisonn the answer on the blue line? Is Erskine? Is Schultz? Maybe, maybe not. But the team isn’t done evolving into what they will eventually become – and until they do, patience and practicality will be key.
